How to delete an email account on Windows Mobile 6.1

A friend recently asked how to delete an email account from her Windows Mobile 6.1 device.  Like a good techie, she searched for the answer, only to find useless forums posts of unrelated babble.  Here's a quick step through of how to do it.  Video is here at the top, or step by step pictures below.

Download here (Right Click, Save As)

Step by Step instructions:

1. Start out on your home screen:
Start out on your home screen

2. Press Start and select the Messaging application:
Press Start and select the Messaging application

3. Once you are in the messaging application:
Once you are in the messaging application

4. Select the account you wish to delete - use the D-Pad, arrow keys or jog wheel, do not click or press the account name with your finger. It will select the account to open and only give you access to delete messages at that point!  Should you do this, you will have to close the Messaging application and restart from step 1.
Select the account you wish to delete

5. Select the Menu option at the bottom right hand corner (right soft key):
Select the Menu option at the bottom right hand corner (right soft key)

6. Select the Delete action:
Select the Delete action

7. Confirm that you want to delete this account:

8. The account you selected is now deleted!

Pretty simple but not obvious. Feel free to leave a comment or send me a message via the Contact form (linked here) or above if you have any questions.

    Hi, I really appreciated the screen cap, however when I press Menu, I find both delete and options are grayed out...any suggestions?! (I am trying to delete an Outlook Account which seems to have been put there by ActiveSync - I dont think it's even got any account details...)

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

    Asher - sorry, I didn't see your comment until just now. You should be able to go into Activesync and remove the account, but in my experience you can't do it using the method above. You may have to connect your phone to a PC and do it via the Activesync client on the PC if you cannot remove it via the Activesync client on your Windows mobile device.

    Azza, I have only seen this happen with a server connection setup via Activesync. If that's not the case, mind sending me a screen shot and I'll be happy to work through it with you.

    You can send screen shots or direct reples to 'steve AT dsaxman DOT com'

    Great post! There is only one thing I would add. Under "messaging, account options" there is a check box called "display account picker when opening messaging." I had that box unchecked so when I selected "messaging" I was taken right into the last mail account that I used. When I checked it, all of the accounts showed up and I was able to delete the one I wanted. Thanks again for posting this.

    To delete the outlook account off the picker if you are not using it, go to activesync like the above post said and you can do this. It will give you two options...you do not need to delte outlook from the phone completely to get it off the picker

    Thank you for this info. I had to remove from Active Sync to get rid of the junk Outlook account.

    Great post--particularly about not tapping the screen but using the arrows or wheels, but when I get to step 5 there isn't any MENU option on the right bottom (or Select on the left, like your screen). I pressed the right soft key anyway (despite not seeing the word "Menu" and still nothing happens? No menu.

    I'm not trying to delete Outlook, I'm trying to delete the original gmail account I set up using the phone (which auto defaulted to POP settings) 'cause it didn't work correctly and I have since set up one manually using gmail's instructions for setting up an IMAP account

    I had the problem on my Samsung Saga WM 6.1. All my messaging (TXT, MMS, GMail and Exchange Server Outlook) disappeared one morning when I turned the phone on. I couldn't get Outlook to work again until I went into ActiveSync and de-selected the email checkbox as one to be synchronized. Calendar had remained working and synchronized during this time! Then I was able to re-enter the parameters and it started working again.

    Hey thanks much for your time in advance. I like the way you do things and was hoping you could help me. When I follow your instructions I get all the way to the part where I hit menu and go down to delete but the delete word is not highlighted or active. What is causing this?

    I spent quite some time trying to figure this out to no avail. I went to T-Mobile, and they couldn't help either. The customer service guy did a quick web search and didn't find anything. I came back to my office and found you immediately. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Really well done, especially the part about not tapping the screen!

    Get info. How about this one. On my home screen my display says I have 1 email unread. I don't have any and I cannot seem to get it cleared. Any ideas?

    Just so everyone knows, it took me the longest time to figure out what I couldn't delete an account (hotmail) because the 'Delete' was grayed out. Rebooted the phone and it worked perfect.

    This is useful, but doesn't solve my problem. I had two e-mail accounts and then one day the folders for one account disappeared from the messaging tree. The disappeared account still lists on the home page (four messages unread) but clicking on this does nothing but highlight the listing. (The other account works fine.) I tried setting up the missing account again, but WM says it already exists! How do I delete it if I can't see it. Any ideas about how to meet this particular WM challenge?

    For those that have the problem with the options "greying" out; I found that I would get that problem after a long period without rebooting my phone. Usually just power cycling, or restarting my phone did the trick.

    I wasn't getting a menu at all but finally figured out that by tapping the account and holding it with the stylus, then I got a pop-up option to Delete it.

    this may be a dumb question but does this delete the actual email account and emails or just remove the email account from being linked to your phone? my cousin had to use my phone to check his email and i dont want to accidently delete all of his emails

    glents — December 30, 2009 10:05 AM
  24. dsaxman avatar

    Glents, it only deletes the link and removes the emails that may have been downloaded from the phone, it does not delete the account or the emails on the server.

    I just installed a patch from Microsoft that was supposed to fix my unable-to-send-email problem, and then my email account disappeared. And now when I try to add it again, it doesn't show up. But if I try to add it a second time, it tells me there's already an account with that information. And yet it doesn't appear in the account picker. (It's IMAP, not Exchange.) Any ideas? Thanks!

    I can not CREATE a new e-mail account on my ASUS 696 running on WinM 6. I can not access the settings of the existing e-mail accounts, as well. Is there any solution? How can I reinstall Windows mobile 6 (or higher) on my device, presuming this is the problem?

    Thanks!

    If your outlook-accounts delete-button shows gray, do this:

    * Active Sync

    * Menu - > Options

    * Choose Microsoft Exchange

    * Menu-> Delete
